ChatGPT vs Google: where customers actually find you

One hands back a list of links. The other writes a paragraph and names a few businesses inside it. For a local business the question is no longer which to optimize for, but how to be found in both, because the answer machine has no page two.

Google is an index that ranks links. ChatGPT is an answer machine that names names. Your customers now use both, and being invisible in either one costs you.

Two different machines, one customer

Google and ChatGPT are not the same tool wearing different logos. Google is an index: it crawls the web, ranks pages, and hands back a list of links for the searcher to choose from. ChatGPT and the other assistants are answer machines: they read across many sources and write one reply, naming a few businesses inside it. The customer using each one behaves differently, and a local business now has to be findable in both.

On Google, a local search still often ends in the map pack and the ten links beneath it. In an assistant, the same question ends in a paragraph. If your business is not one of the few the model names, the customer never sees you at all, because there is no page two of a chat answer.

How each one decides who wins

The signals overlap more than the hype admits, but the emphasis differs.

Google local search

Ranked in the map and the links

  • Wins on: proximity, relevance, and prominence
  • Leans on: Google Business Profile and reviews
  • Rewards: local keywords and location pages
  • Ends in: a map pack and a list of links
  • Second chances: page two still exists
ChatGPT and AI answers

Named inside the reply

  • Wins on: being readable, quotable, and corroborated
  • Leans on: schema, llms.txt, and consistent facts
  • Rewards: plain content a model can lift verbatim
  • Ends in: one paragraph naming a few businesses
  • Second chances: none, you are named or you are not

What Google still rewards

For local search, Google leans on three things: how close you are to the searcher, how relevant your business is to the query, and how prominent you are, which is where reviews, listings, and links come in. In practice that means a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, correct listings across the web, real reviews, and pages that carry the city and service a customer actually types.

  • A complete Google Business Profile. The single biggest lever in local search, kept accurate and current.
  • Consistent listings. The same name, address, and phone number everywhere Google checks.
  • Location and service pages. Real content for the cities and services you want to be found for.
  • Speed and mobile. A fast, clean page still ranks better and converts better.

What the AI answer rewards

Assistants do not rank a page; they decide whether to trust and quote it. That trust is earned by structure and agreement across sources.

  • Schema on every page. Structured data states plainly what your business is, so a model reads facts instead of guessing.
  • An llms.txt file. A plain-text briefing that tells assistants what you are and how to describe you. More in What is llms.txt.
  • Quotable content. Answers written in clean, self-contained sentences a model can lift and have stand on their own.
  • Corroboration. Directories and local roundups repeating the same facts, because models cross-check before they name you.
On Google there is a page two. In a chat answer, there is not.

The good news: it is mostly one job

A business does not have to choose. The site that wins in Google, fast, clean, well-structured, accurate, and locally consistent, is also the site an assistant finds easiest to read and quote. Add the AI-specific layer of schema, llms.txt, and quotable content on top of solid local SEO, and one build competes in both places. We lay out that overlap in AI SEO vs traditional SEO.

The mistake is to treat them as two separate projects and pay for each twice, or to do one and quietly lose the other. Build the whole stack once, and you show up in the map pack, in the ten links, and in the answer that increasingly sits above them all.
