Local SEO: what actually moves the needle

Local search is not about chasing a hundred keywords. It is about getting a short list of fundamentals genuinely right, so you show up in the map pack, the local links, and the AI answer. Here is that list, in order of impact, and the one place city pages go wrong.

Most local searches end in the little map near the top of Google, or in an AI answer that names two businesses. Local SEO is the work of being one of the few that show up in both.

The prize is the map pack, then the answer

For a local business, most searches end in one of two places: the little map with three businesses that sits near the top of Google, or, increasingly, the AI answer that names a couple of businesses in a sentence. Local SEO is the work of being one of the few that show up in both. It is less about chasing a hundred keywords and more about getting a short list of fundamentals genuinely right.

Here is the list that actually moves the needle, in rough order of impact.

01

Google Business Profile, complete and accurate

The single biggest lever in local search. Right categories, hours, services, photos, and a description, kept current.

02

Consistent name, address, phone

The same details everywhere Google checks. Mismatches across listings quietly erode the trust that decides the map pack.

03

Real reviews, answered

Genuine reviews and thoughtful replies are a ranking and trust signal. Never buy or fake them; it backfires.

04

Location and service pages

Real, differentiated pages for the cities and services you want to be found for, not thin templated copies.

05

Fast, mobile-first site

Most local searches are on a phone. A slow page ranks worse and converts worse, twice the loss.

06

Schema and the AI layer

Structured data and an llms.txt so Google and AI answers can read and cite your business correctly.

Why consistency beats cleverness

Local search rewards trust, and trust is built from agreement. When your name, address, phone, hours, and services say the same thing on your site, your Google Business Profile, and every directory, Google is confident enough to show you in the map pack. When they disagree, even by an old suite number or a former phone, that confidence drops. Most local ranking problems are not exotic; they are a business that moved, rebranded, or changed numbers and never fixed it everywhere.

The same consistency now feeds AI answers. Assistants cross-check sources before they name a business, so the site that agrees with its own listings is the one that gets quoted. We cover that in ChatGPT vs Google for local search.

Most local ranking problems are not exotic. They are facts that disagree with each other.
- On why consistency wins

Location pages, done right or not at all

City pages are powerful and also the easiest way to get penalized. Google's spam policies target doorway pages: near-identical pages that swap only the city name to catch every local search. They do not rank, and at scale they can drag a whole site down. A real location page earns its place with genuinely local content: the actual service area, real details, and a reason for that page to exist beyond the keyword. Fewer, better location pages beat a thin matrix every time.
