DSO website platform vs custom build:
which fits your group?

A platform can fit a small or early group. Choose a custom build if you plan to add offices, need booking tied to each office and want to own the site.

Platform terms differ by vendor. Confirm every point in writing with any vendor, including us.

The short answer

Decide how your group will grow.

A platform fits a small or early group that wants ready layouts, a vendor to run the system and a monthly fee. A custom build fits a group that plans to add offices, needs booking per office and wants to own the site. Both can work. The real test is what happens when you add an office, and what you keep if you leave.

This is WTM’s view as a custom website studio. We do not name or review any platform. Confirm each platform point in writing with any vendor.

Two approaches.
Different terms.

Platform points are general and differ by vendor. Your signed agreement is what counts.
DecisionPlatform or template systemWTM custom build
OwnershipSet by the vendor’s agreement. Ask who owns the design, code, content and domain. You own everything we build.
Location pages per officeBuilt from the system’s ready layouts. Ask how many are included and what each can hold.Every office page comes from one shared template, so the newest page is as complete as the first.
Booking per officeDepends on the system and your booking tools. Ask to see one office’s book button open that office’s schedule. Each office page gets a book button tied to that office’s schedule. The connection is agreed in scope, office by office.
Adding a new locationAsk who adds it, how long it takes and how the fee changes.Adding an office may mean one new record and one new page, not a new website.
Brand control across officesBounded by the system’s layouts. Ask what you can change across all offices at once. The group owns the brand, design and page templates. One central owner controls them.
Reporting by officeAsk what reports you get, and whether you can see each office on its own.Agree in scope what each office should track. Ongoing reporting is quoted separately.

A 9-location dental group · Group-reported results

A real group.
Two measured months.

18+new patients in month one.

We built a new website, location pages and online booking for a dental group with 9 locations, through our Patient Growth System. In month two, new patients ran 17% above the group’s usual monthly growth. We cannot share the group’s name.

Group-reported counts. This does not prove the website alone caused the increase, and it does not predict another group’s results.

What does a DSO website platform give you?

A platform, or template system, is a hosted website system with ready layouts. A vendor runs it. You usually pay a monthly fee.

You pick a layout, add your offices and go live.

The appeal is speed and less to manage. That is a real benefit for a few offices and a small team. What you get differs by vendor, so ask for the list in writing. For a single practice view, read our platform or custom guide for one practice.

What does a custom build give you?

A custom build is a site designed and coded for your group. At WTM, every office page comes from one shared template. Each office has one record: name, address, phone, hours, booking link and map pin. That record feeds the page, the structured data and the book button.

You decide how the brand looks across offices. You decide who edits what. You own everything we build.

The trade is more work at the start: decisions, content and page reviews.

When does a platform fit your group?

  • You have a few offices and need sites live soon.
  • A ready layout covers what your offices need.
  • You want one vendor to run the hosting and the system for an ongoing fee.
  • No one on your team has time to plan a site or review pages.
  • Your group may change shape soon, and you want to wait before investing in a template.

Those are good reasons. For a small or early group, a platform can be the right call. Read the exit terms before you sign.

When does a custom build fit your group?

  • You plan to add offices, and each new one should take a page, not a project.
  • Each office needs its own book button tied to its own schedule.
  • You want one brand standard across every office, with clear rules on who changes what.
  • Some offices already rank in search, and a move needs care. See how to redesign without losing SEO.
  • You want to own the site and pay once for the build.

Choose it when the structure has to carry many offices.

What should you ask any vendor, including us?

  • Who owns the design, the code, the content and the domain?
  • How is a new office added, by whom, and what does it cost?
  • Can each office page book into that office’s schedule? Show us one working.
  • Can office managers edit only their own office?
  • What reports can we see for each office?
  • What are the setup fee, the ongoing fee, the term and the notice period?
  • If we leave, what do we take, in what format, and how fast is the domain released?

One site, separate sites or a hybrid?

This choice comes before platform or custom. One site puts every office on one domain, each with its own location page. It fits offices that share a name. Separate sites let practices keep names patients already trust, but you have more sites to update. A hybrid keeps a group site and lets some practices keep their own name. It needs the clearest rules. See DSO website design for more on each model.

What does a WTM DSO build include?

WTM Studio builds custom websites for dental groups. Founder Ray Hussain leads every project. A DSO build is planned around:

  • A location page template. Each office page holds its address, phone, hours, services, team and directions.
  • A booking path per office. Each book button opens that office’s schedule, or calls the office if it books by phone. Connections are agreed in scope, office by office, once we see what each office uses.
  • Structured data per location. Each office page carries its own block, linked to the parent group. It matches the page and the office’s Google Business Profile.
  • One record per office. Clear rules on what stays central and what each office edits.

Website redesigns typically cost $6,000 to $30,000 as a one-time project. We start with a free homepage concept for one practice. Then we agree the scope and one flat quote. No required retainer. You own everything we build. SEO and AI SEO are quoted separately. Read our pricing and engagement terms.

Before you decide

A few good questions.

Is a platform or a custom build better for a DSO website?

Neither is better for every group. A platform can fit a small or early group that wants ready layouts and a monthly plan. A custom build fits a group that plans to add offices, needs booking per office and wants to own the site. Confirm every platform term in writing with the vendor.

Who owns a DSO website built on a platform?

It depends on the vendor’s agreement. Read what it says about the design, the code, the content and the domain. Ask in writing what you can take with you if you leave. With WTM, you own everything we build.

Can each office have its own online booking?

With a WTM build, yes. Each location page gets a book button tied to that office’s schedule. If an office books by phone only, the button calls that office. How booking connects to each office’s system is agreed in scope, office by office. With a platform, ask the vendor to show it working for one office before you sign.

Should our group run one website or separate sites?

It depends on how patients know each office. One site fits offices that share a name. Separate sites fit practices whose own names carry trust and will stay. A hybrid mixes both. If you are unsure, start with a location page.

How is a WTM custom build priced?

WTM Studio website redesigns typically cost $6,000 to $30,000 as a one-time project. We start with a free homepage concept for one practice. Then we agree the scope and one flat quote. No required retainer. SEO and AI SEO are quoted separately.
